#ElvisEnergyExperiment: Decluttering

September 22, 2021

In 2021, we continue exploring our energy. How it affects us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We’ve hooked up with a series of experts who’ll set an experiment every month to help us discover a new way of managing our energy.

Throughout April we’re going to be exploring the impact our spaces and environment has on our energy, and look at how a good old declutter can give us a massive boost.

Let’s face it, most of us have a lot of stuff. Stuff we need and some stuff that we probably don’t… either way it's all too easy to let it accumulate and before you know it things can feel cluttered.

This doesn’t help our already full and busy minds. In fact it's often said that our physical environment is a mirror image of what goes on in our head (and vice versa), so it’s likely that cluttered and disorganised spaces are not going to do us any favours in terms of how we live and feel energetically. We have decided that this is the month to get things under control and we’re joining forces with Katherine Blackler, Professional Organiser at Sort My Space. Katherine is an expert in organisation and just what we need to simplify our chaos at home and work.

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful".

William Morris.

Katherine firmly believes that our space should only contain things that hold purpose - be that in the joy or use they bring. She has worked with many individuals and organisations to simplify a home/work space and vastly improve the way they work and live. Most of us are still doing a fair amount of work from home and so we have decided to focus this month’s challenge on our workspace - be that a corner of your bedroom or spacious home office - whatever space you have available will benefit from Katherine’s magic!

Our workspace can quickly become disordered, especially when we are spending more time than ever at home and the line between home and work life is decidedly busy and blurred. Admittedly, our Elvis home offices get a little bit messy… Okay so maybe a lot messy and sometimes at the point of multiple post-it’s, paperwork pile-ups and a little feeling of where did I put that file…!? But have no fear Katherine has devised a four week plan to get us back to a work space that promotes clarity, focus and better energy.

Week 1: Goal Setting.

For the first week we are starting by looking at what we specifically want to achieve by settling some goals.

  1. Stand back and have a look at your space through ‘strangers eyes’.
  2. Take photos of your starting point.
  3. Identify anything that doesn’t belong in this space. Look at what’s working? What’s not?

Week 2: Declutter. This week we are getting stuck in and taking the plunge of organising your space.

  1. To help you get started and ask yourself what do you need and what do you use?
  2. Do you need to own the item, is it still relevant and where will you store it?
  3. If you are selling, consider if it is worth your time to do so, or if your time is better spent working and giving things away?

Week 3: Organise & Test.

This week our focus is on setting Zones for our workspaces.

  1. Consider the physical space, does your furniture do the job well?
  2. Have you got the right storage solution and is it easy to access?
  3. Would any softer décor, a plant or colour help define your zone and make it a nicer place to be?
  4. Apply the 1-in 1-out rule for future acquisitions.

Week 4: Scents, Sounds & Boundaries.

You’ve decluttered and organised your chosen space physically and hopefully seeing and feeling the benefit of that.

  1. Scents (different fragrances can uplift & energise, others calm & soothe).
  2. Sounds (introduce a music system or speakers to change ambiance of space or investing in sound-cancelling headphones for focus etc).
  3. Boundaries (for your mind and time).

We’ll be reporting back throughout the month on how the experiment’s going for us and what the impact de-cluttering is having on our energy and focus.

Follow our progress on Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter and share any pics or stories of your own decluttering experience. We’d love to know how it impacts on you. How you felt before and what a difference you noticed afterwards to your energy, productivity and mood.

Big Love,

The Upping Your Elvis Team.
